Consumer tips

A better deal for consumers and businesses

Bill 31, A Better Deal for Consumers and Businesses Act, was passed in the Legislative Assembly. The majority of the changes will be in effect once the Bill receives Royal Assent. New protections in the areas of ticket sales, high-cost credit, veterinary service, car sales and repairs, and changes to AMVIC will come into effect as related regulations are developed throughout 2018.

Protecting consumers and honest businesses

Service Alberta’s Consumer Investigations Unit concluded 618 investigations during the 2016-17 fiscal year. As a result, the courts ordered:

  • $957,010 in restitution to be paid back to consumers
  • $272,445 in fines to individuals and businesses for contraventions such as misleading consumers, operating without licences or failing to refund consumers.

In addition to court-ordered penalties, Service Alberta undertook a number of administrative actions.
